I finally played this game - twice! Once on beginner, and then proud. I'd already checked out the secret movies on youtube, but like KH2, I just wanted to earn those movies. Proud wasn't as painful as expected, you just had to level up several more levels and get a few high level abilities, which were very easy to get anyway.
The story was ok, it was about the level I expected. The storytelling was more engaging in Terra's, it stayed on message with its narrative and you saw a person struggling against their instincts. Aqua was interesting to follow, given she was cleaning up the mess around her. Ven was...meh. The storytelling was choppy, and he felt like a copy and paste of Sora from the first game. Thank goodness for the secret movies, which actually did tug at my heartstrings in the right way, otherwise I'd look at this as a total step back for the franchise.
I loved the gameplay. At first it felt confusing, because they gave you a few different ways straight up to hurt things. Once I was into it, it all made sense. During my first playthrough, which was Ven on beginner, I didn't meld too much. It appeared unnecessary, and it could have been, if not for the abilities that come with melding. During the other playthroughs, I had a great time melding to those powerups. Exp walker was especially awesome. The need to collect all the abilities also made levelling less of a chore.
Getting through the levels wasn't a challenge. The game won't let you go to an area if it doesn't connect to that character's story, or if the narrative doesn't call for it yet, so you won't get lost. Bosses have their gimmicks for quick damage, so you likely won't die. There aren't too many platform areas, and when there are, they honestly won't challenge you. The only times you'll be pulling your hair out are the mini games in Disney Town, where you must complete one for each character. I didn't have a problem and proud doesn't change the diffifulty here, but I have heard a lot of angst when it comes to the ice-cream game. As for optional games elsewhere, I did the optional gameboard a few times, but it didn't interest me. I also only entered the tournaments as Terra to get the missing Xehanort report.
On the voice acting, Jesse did an excellent job. He still sounds like a teenager, and conveyed the innocence of his character. Hayley-Joel conveyed a sinister tone with conviction, it's just a shame he sounds like a complete adult now. The newcomers...terrible, terrible, TERRIBLE! Terra sounded lifeless, and Aqua was not only wooden, but would either put incorrect emphasis on a word, or none at all where there should be.
Art direction, great as always. If I had to nit pick, Prince Philip's head looked strange; too angular, the rest of the Disney characters. The worlds could have done with more life. You only saw principle characters and had to mentally fill in the gaps. For example. imagine watching Cinderella at the ball with only her, the prince, her step family and that attendant guy.
We only had one additional Final Fantasy character, but he was used appropriately and brought a grin to my face. The franchise has never treated Final Fantasy characters in the same way as the Disney, which is a shame. I would have preferred the Dissidia treatment, instead of melding them into whatever suits the scenario. Given this fact, I'm not outraged of the addition of only one, because these really are shadows of the characters we FF fans know and love.
So there it is. Most of you have probably played it already, so if you have comments of your own, I'd love to hear your take.
